Packers/Broncos Thoughts and Observations

Man, did Rodgers look good. I feel so much better after last night. We certainly need to adress the run D, and we got a little banged up. Either way, I think hope is on the horizon.

What can they say, would have been even better without some drops. The run game didn't look all that solid, I will be happy to see Grant.

What is the Sitton status?

Rodgers was what, 18\22? 1 was a throwaway, and 1 was a drop, so 20\22? That's insane.

I think Noah Herron definitely put his name in the running for #2 Rb, at LEAST #3. He's had a very good camp and preseason, whereas Wynn and Blumpkin...meh. Meh, I say!

The defense will find their flow. Facing Tavaris Jackson in week 1 helps. It's like facing a practice squad QB.

I think Sitton will be ok. I'm too lazy to look it up but I'm pretty sure it was minor. Same with Jones.

All I hear about him is how bad his form and running style is.  He got into the endzone a couple times, and that's what really matters.  He's gonna have to have an impressive week 4 though.

DENVER The Green Bay Packers lost their starting safeties in the first half of Fridays preseason game against the Denver Broncos, but the injuries dont appear to be serious.

In a three-play stretch in the second quarter, both Atari Bigby and Nick Collins left the game due to injuries. Bigby limped to the sideline at Invesco Field after tackling Broncos tight end Nate Jackson following an 11-yard completion. Two plays later, Nick Collins was down on the turf for several minutes following a 6-yard gain by Broncos running back Andre Hall.

Both were listed as questionable but never returned. Bigby left the game due to an ankle injury, and Collins was taken out because of a neck injury.

Atari had an ankle that they dont feel is very bad, and Nick Collins I dont want to call it a stinger, but he just kind of twisted it, Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. I talked to him on the sideline in the third quarter. He thinks hes going to be fine.

Aaron Rouse replaced Bigby, and Tyrone Culver took over for Collins. Because the Packers have only four safeties on their roster, they moved cornerback Jarrett Bush to safety for parts of the second half.

After sustaining only one significant injury in last weeks preseason game at San Francisco a knee injury to backup tight end Evan Moore the Packers left Denver with a much longer injury list.

Also knocked out were starting right guard Josh Sitton and No. 3 receiver James Jones. Sitton injured his left knee on the second play of the Packers second series in the first quarter. He spent the rest of the first half with ice on his knee, but he was seen walking around the Packers bench area. Tony Moll replaced Sitton, who did not return.

McCarthy said Sitton was the most serious of the injured players.

Sitton said he was scheduled to undergo tests today after the team arrives back in Green Bay.

McCarthy had hoped to solidify his starters on the offensive line after this game, but the injury situation might muddle that. Center Scott Wells did not play against the Broncos due to his recurring lower back problems, so Jason Spitz once again started at center.

Jones left after the first series of the third quarter. He caught a pair of passes from Aaron Rodgers on that drive after dropping one pass in the first half.

Cornerback Charles Woodson missed two plays in the first quarter after he appeared to get hurt, but he returned.

Short day: With Rodgers playing through the first series of the third quarter, it left little time for the backup quarterbacks.

Brian Brohm got just two series of work and failed to complete a pass in four attempts. Third-stringer Matt Flynn took over with 8:21 remaining in the fourth quarter and completed his first two passes, but they went for just |3 yards (to Jordy Nelson) and minus-1 yard (to Chris Francies). He didnt throw another pass.

The two rookie quarterbacks likely will get extended playing time in Thursdays preseason finale against the Tennessee Titans at Lambeau Field because Rodgers and the No. 1 offense are only expected to play a series or two.

Brian, I thought he did a good job with the run-game checks, McCarthy said. We had a lot of runs in his two or three series that I recall. He didnt have a lot of opportunities in the passing game. We need to give Brian and Matt more opportunities in the passing game next week because they didnt have many opportunities tonight.

Rodgers sneaky: Its been a long time since anyone had three quarterback sneaks in one game for the Packers, but Rodgers did just that against the Broncos and was successful every time.

He converted a third-and-1 on the games first series, a fourth-and-1 in the second half and scored on a third-and-goal at the Broncos 1-yard line in the third quarter.

It was one of the things I talked with Mike about this offseason, Rodgers said. I said, Hey, third and inches, lets quarterback sneak it. He was all for it. Those are important downs for us and important situations. Id rather have the ball in my hands with the shorter distance to go than to turn and give it to a (running) back.

Scratched: Despite returning to practice on a limited basis this week, defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila (knee) was again held out.

There were no other surprises among the players scratched. They were: running back Ryan Grant (hamstring), safety Charlie Peprah (hamstring), running back DeShawn Wynn (ankle), linebackers A.J. Hawk (chest), defensive tackle Ryan Pickett (hamstring), defensive tackle Justin Harrell (back) and Wells (back).

Lee fined: An NFL spokesman said cornerback Pat Lee was fined $7,500 for impermissible use of the helmet, when he struck a player in the chest area with his helmet during last Saturdays preseason game against the 49ers.

Defensive end Jason Hunter was not fined for either of his 15-yard facemask penalties in that game.

Odds and ends: The Packers finally got some pressure on the quarterback in the fourth quarter, when Hunter hit Broncos backup quarterback Patrick Ramsey as he was throwing, allowing linebacker Tracy White to pick off the pass. They didnt have any quarterback hits last week against San Francisco. Backup cornerback Will Blackmon had a 43-yard punt return in the third quarter that gave the Packers possession at the Broncos 40-yard line. Kicker Mason Crosby missed wide right on a |53-yard field goal attempt in the third quarter. The first six kickoffs resulted in touchbacks before Crosbys opening kickoff of the second half was returned from 2 yards deep in the end zone.

I think Blumpkin shows more promise than anyone on the depth chart past Bjack, but he cant really make the roster unless we keep 4 backs i dont think.

Grant, Jackson, Herron, Blumpkin. Herron gets the nod because hes been here and still shows flash. RB is solid for us i think. the fact that we have such competition at that spot is a great thing.

there is a debate on the quality of nick name for Aaron Rodgers - Arod. But if he keeps performing like that, we are gonna have to call him BigFoot.
